About Barfleur Village

On the wild north-eastern tip of the Cotentin peninsula in Normandy, Barfleur is a charming little fishing port, one of the Plus Beaux Villages de France, its sober granite houses gathered around a picturesque harbour where fishing boats still land their catch. Once one of the great ports of medieval Normandy — it was from here, legend says, that William the Conqueror's ship set sail for England — Barfleur is today a peaceful haven of grey stone and blue sea, famous for its mussels and its unspoilt maritime charm. Nearby rises the Gatteville lighthouse, one of the tallest in France, whose 365 steps reward climbers with vast views over the coast. Authentic, salty and beautifully austere, Barfleur is a gem of the Norman coast, a perfect place to savour seafood, sea air and the timeless life of a working port.
