About Brantôme-en-Périgord

On a bend of the peaceful river Dronne in the green Périgord, Brantôme is one of the most enchanting towns in the Dordogne, so beautifully wrapped in water that it is known as the "Venice of the Périgord". The old town sits on an island encircled by the river, linked to its banks by old stone bridges, and is dominated by a great Benedictine abbey founded, legend says, by Charlemagne, with the oldest bell tower in France rising on the cliff behind. Into that cliff are carved remarkable troglodyte chambers, including a mysterious relief of the Last Judgment. Riverside gardens, an elbow-shaped bridge, weeping willows and stone houses complete this idyllic scene. Historic, romantic and magnificently sited amid water and rock, Brantôme is a jewel of the Périgord Vert and a place of exceptional charm.
