About Castelnau-de-Montmiral Village
Perched on a hill above the valley of the Vère in the Tarn, Castelnau-de-Montmiral is a beautiful fortified bastide, one of the Plus Beaux Villages de France, founded in the 13th century by the counts of Toulouse. Its jewel is the enchanting arcaded central square, the Place des Arcades, lined with ancient half-timbered and stone houses whose covered walkways shelter cafés and craft shops. Narrow medieval lanes radiate out to old gateways and viewpoints over the surrounding countryside of vineyards and the Grésigne forest. The village church treasures a remarkable jewelled 13th-century reliquary cross. Wonderfully preserved, wrapped in the gentle landscapes of the Gaillac wine country, Castelnau-de-Montmiral combines the classic charm of a southern bastide with a superb hilltop setting. Handsome, historic and welcoming, it is one of the loveliest villages of the Tarn.
