About Clisson

On the banks of the Sèvre Nantaise at the southern gateway of Brittany's old borders, Clisson is a town like no other in the region — a Loire town rebuilt in the 19th century in the style of Tuscany. After the devastation of the Revolutionary wars, artists and patrons reimagined Clisson with Italianate villas, campaniles, terracotta roofs and umbrella pines, so that today its riverside walks and gardens evoke the landscapes of Italy in the heart of western France. Watching over it all rises a great medieval castle, one of the largest in the region, and a fine old covered market. Famous today also for its huge summer metal festival, Clisson blends medieval history, Italian-inspired romance and riverside beauty. Unusual, picturesque and charming, it is one of the most surprising and delightful towns of the Loire-Atlantique.
