Perched like an eagle's nest on a rocky pinnacle high above the Mediterranean between Nice and Monaco, Èze is one of the most spectacular villages on the French Riviera, a medieval maze of stone lanes, vaulted passages and flower-draped houses spiralling up to a summit crowned by a famous exotic garden. From the garden, laid out among the ruins of an old castle and planted with cacti and succulents, the view plunges dizzyingly down to the sparkling sea and along the whole coastline — one of the most breathtaking panoramas on the Côte d'Azur. The car-free village is full of art galleries, craft workshops and elegant hotels, while a steep path once walked by the philosopher Nietzsche descends to the shore.
