About La Roche-Chalais

On the western edge of the Périgord, where the Dordogne meets the countryside of the Gironde and Charente, La Roche-Chalais is a pleasant small town perched above the river Dronne, at the gateway to the great forest of the Double. Its old quarter of stone houses gathers on a rocky promontory around a church, with terraces and viewpoints overlooking the wooded valley and the tranquil river below. Set amid the ponds, oak and pine woods of the Double forest — a wild, watery landscape rich in wildlife — the town offers a peaceful base for walking, fishing and exploring the borderlands of the Périgord. Quiet, green and off the tourist trail, watched over by its riverside church, La Roche-Chalais is a restful and authentic country town, a pleasant stop for those discovering the lesser-known corners of the Dordogne.
