About La Romieu Village

In the heart of the Gers, La Romieu is a charming Gascon village, one of the Plus Beaux Villages de France, that grew up around a magnificent 14th-century collegiate church — a UNESCO World Heritage site on the pilgrim roads to Compostela. The great church of Saint-Pierre, with its twin towers, cloister and frescoed sacristy, dominates the village and can be climbed for wide views over the surrounding countryside. La Romieu is also famous for its endearing legend of Angéline, the girl who saved the village from famine with her cats — commemorated by dozens of stone cat sculptures scattered charmingly through the lanes. Wrapped in the vineyards and rolling farmland of Gascony, this peaceful village combines great religious heritage, a delightful local legend and southern tranquillity. Historic, quirky and lovely, La Romieu is a gem of the Gers.
