Pressed between a soaring cliff and the tranquil river Dordogne, La Roque-Gageac is one of the most photographed villages in France, a Plus Beaux Villages de France of golden stone houses strung along the water beneath a great honey-coloured rock face. Its single street and steep lanes wind past medieval and Renaissance houses to troglodyte dwellings and a fort carved into the cliff, while the mild, south-facing microclimate allows a lush exotic garden of palms and bamboo to flourish. From the riverbank, traditional flat-bottomed gabare boats set out to glide past the châteaux of the Dordogne. Magnificently sited, warm-hued and reflected in the calm water, La Roque-Gageac is a jewel of the Périgord Noir, a place of exceptional beauty at the heart of the château-studded Dordogne valley.
