About Mirepoix

In the Ariège, at the foot of the Pyrenees, Mirepoix is one of the most beautiful bastides in the south of France, famous for its magnificent central square ringed by medieval half-timbered houses standing on wooden galleries — the couverts — supported by pillars and beams, some carved with grotesque heads centuries old. This enchanting arcaded market place, alive with cafés, craft shops and a colourful weekly market, is one of the finest of its kind in the country. Nearby rises a Gothic cathedral said to have the widest nave in France. Founded in the 13th century on a grid plan, the bastide breathes the atmosphere of medieval Occitania. Handsome, atmospheric and beautifully preserved, wrapped in the countryside at the gateway to the Pyrenees and Cathar country, Mirepoix is a jewel of the Ariège and a delight to explore.
