About Montreuil-Bellay

On the banks of the river Thouet in the Anjou, Montreuil-Bellay is a beautiful fortified town crowned by one of the finest castles in the region, a magnificent medieval and Renaissance château still ringed by its curtain walls and towers above the water. Behind its ramparts and gateways, the old town preserves a collegiate church, narrow lanes of tuffeau-stone houses and vaulted medieval cellars once used by winegrowers, wrapped in the vineyards of the Saumur country. The castle, still inhabited, can be visited for its richly furnished rooms, medieval kitchen and gardens overlooking the river. Historic, elegant and beautifully sited between ramparts and vines, close to the great abbey of Fontevraud, Montreuil-Bellay combines a superb château, a charming walled town and the gentle beauty of the Loire valley — a delightful and less-crowded gem of the Anjou.
