About Pont-Aven

In a wooded valley of southern Finistère where the river Aven tumbles over granite rocks, Pont-Aven is a charming Breton town famous the world over as the "town of painters". It was here, in the 1880s, that Paul Gauguin and a circle of artists developed a bold new style, founding the celebrated Pont-Aven School that marked a turning point in modern art. The town of old mills and stone houses, immortalised in their canvases, is still full of galleries, and the leafy Bois d'Amour by the river remains as inspiring as ever. Pont-Aven is also famous for its buttery galettes biscuits. Artistic, picturesque and wrapped in the green beauty of the Aven valley, close to the sea, Pont-Aven is a delightful town and a place of pilgrimage for lovers of painting and Breton charm alike.
