At the mouth of the wild gorges of the Bourne in the Vercors, Pont-en-Royans is a strikingly picturesque village famous for its extraordinary hanging houses — tall, brightly coloured medieval dwellings built right on the edge of the cliffs, their façades and balconies overhanging the rushing green river far below. This dramatic cluster of ochre, pink and blue houses, clinging vertiginously to the rock above the water, forms one of the most photographed scenes in the Alps. The village, gateway to the Vercors massif, also hosts a museum devoted to water, and its old bridge offers the best view of the famous façades.
