About Saint-Jean-de-Luz

On the Basque coast near the Spanish border, Saint-Jean-de-Luz is an elegant seaside town and traditional fishing port, gathered around a beautiful sheltered bay with a fine sandy beach protected from the Atlantic swell. Its lively old town of colourful Basque houses, with their carved timbers and red shutters, is full of shops selling local specialities — espadrilles, linen, chocolate and macarons. The town holds a special place in French history: it was here, in 1660, that the young Louis XIV married the Infanta of Spain in the fine church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste, still one of the loveliest Basque churches. With its harbour, beach, refined architecture and rich Basque culture, Saint-Jean-de-Luz combines seaside pleasure with heritage and gastronomy. Charming, colourful and beautifully sited, it is one of the jewels of the Pays Basque.
