At the foot of the Pyrenees, where the pilgrim roads of France gather before crossing the mountains into Spain, Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port is a beautiful walled Basque town and the historic gateway to the final stretch of the Camino de Santiago. Its rose-pink sandstone houses line steep cobbled streets that descend to the little river Nive, crossed by an old bridge, and climb to a citadel built by Vauban with sweeping views over the surrounding valleys. The famous Rue de la Citadelle, lined with pilgrims' hostels and shops, still rings with the footsteps of walkers setting out over the Pyrenees.
