About Sainte-Agnès Village
Clinging to a rocky crest more than 700 metres above the Mediterranean behind Menton, Sainte-Agnès is the highest coastal village in Europe, a breathtaking eagle's nest of a place, one of the Plus Beaux Villages de France. Its steep medieval lanes, vaulted passages and flower-hung stone houses climb toward the ruins of a Saracen-era castle and gardens with dizzying views down to the sparkling sea and the Italian Riviera. Deep in the mountain lies a fort of the 1930s Maginot Line, hollowed out to defend the coast, now open to visitors. The combination of medieval village, mountain drama and coastal panorama is extraordinary. Perched, panoramic and richly atmospheric, wrapped in the wild hinterland of the Côte d'Azur, Sainte-Agnès offers one of the most spectacular settings of any village in France.
