About Sainte-Suzanne

Perched on a rocky spur above the valley of the Erve in the Mayenne, Sainte-Suzanne is a magnificent fortified hilltop village, one of the Plus Beaux Villages de France, famous as the stronghold that heroically resisted William the Conqueror for years in the 11th century. Encircled by well-preserved ramparts, the medieval town gathers around a great keep and a later Renaissance château, its lanes of old stone houses opening to sweeping views over the wooded countryside below. Museums, craft workshops and viewpoints along the walls bring its rich history to life. Wrapped in the green bocage of the Mayenne, dominating the valley from its rocky perch, Sainte-Suzanne combines a dramatic setting, powerful fortifications and medieval charm. Historic, panoramic and beautifully preserved, it is one of the loveliest and most evocative villages of western France.
