About Sarlat-la-Canéda

In the heart of the Périgord Noir, Sarlat-la-Canéda is one of the most beautiful and best-preserved medieval towns in France, a golden-stone marvel of narrow lanes, hidden squares and honey-coloured mansions crowned with lauze-tiled roofs. Its remarkable ensemble of medieval and Renaissance architecture, saved and restored in the 20th century, makes it feel like an open-air museum — yet it remains a living town, famous above all for its magnificent markets, where the celebrated gastronomy of the Périgord, from foie gras and truffles to walnuts and duck, fills the squares with colour and aroma. Warm-hued, atmospheric and endlessly picturesque, especially when lit by lanterns at night, Sarlat is a jewel of the Dordogne and one of the great destinations of south-west France, a feast for lovers of history, architecture and good food alike.
