About Semur-en-Auxois
Rising dramatically on a pink granite spur almost encircled by a bend of the river Armançon, Semur-en-Auxois is one of the most striking medieval towns in Burgundy, its great round towers and ramparts crowning the rock above the water. Within the fortifications, a charming old town of stone houses, cobbled lanes and hidden squares gathers around the magnificent Gothic collegiate church of Notre-Dame, with its fine sculpted portal and stained glass. From the ramparts, terraces and old bridges, beautiful views open over the gorge of the Armançon and the surrounding Auxois countryside. Historic, picturesque and superbly sited, wrapped in the green hills of Burgundy near the abbey of Fontenay, Semur-en-Auxois combines powerful medieval fortifications with the charm of a living town. Handsome, atmospheric and beautifully preserved, it is one of the jewels of the Côte-d'Or.
