About Usson Village
Crowning a basalt hill in the Auvergne, Usson is a charming Plus Beaux Villages de France with a dramatic past: it was here, in its now-ruined fortress, that Queen Marguerite de Valois — the famous "Reine Margot" — was exiled for nearly twenty years. Today the village of old stone houses climbs the volcanic slopes, its lanes lined with grapevines and flowers, to a hilltop crowned by a statue of the Virgin and remarkable columns of black basalt, remnants of the ancient volcano. From the summit, a magnificent panorama sweeps over the plains of the Limagne, the Livradois and the distant chain of volcanoes. Steeped in royal history and set amid the volcanic landscapes of the Puy-de-Dôme, Usson combines a romantic story, a beautiful village and one of the finest views in the Auvergne.
