About Vaison-la-Romaine

At the foot of Mont Ventoux in the Vaucluse, Vaison-la-Romaine is a town of exceptional richness where three ages meet across the river Ouvèze. On one bank spread the extensive remains of a Roman city — streets, villas, mosaics, a theatre and baths — among the most important Roman ruins in France, alongside a fine Romanesque cathedral and cloister. Spanning the river is a superbly preserved Roman bridge, still in use after two thousand years. On the far bank, a picturesque medieval upper town of steep cobbled lanes and old stone houses climbs to a ruined castle with sweeping views. Wrapped in the vineyards of the southern Rhône beneath the great peak of Ventoux, Vaison-la-Romaine combines Roman, Romanesque and medieval heritage in one remarkable town — a fascinating jewel of Provence.
